"The Hunted" provides a smooth transition from de la Pena's "The Living" . The seamless continuity of this sequel allows previous fans of "The Living" to continue the arduous journey to a place of hope with the main character Shy along with a motley crew of intriguing characters. Those who have read "The Living" will immediately recognize and easily recall the familiar characters, yet first time readers will enjoy "The Hunted" as a stand-alone novel. The setting has ample destruction of their community along with its infrastructure as expected in a post-apocalyptic state hit by multiple catastrophes. Each character is developed with an edge of suspense and unpredictability in terms of their past and perhaps their future including our protagonist Shy. The reader invariably will make connections between the novel and our disturbing reality of the power and control that corporations have on our population. The novel is emotionally gripping and the ending is well worth the reader's anticipation as it draws to an unpredictable and sublime conclusion. Amazing.
