The faces that appear on Crown Fountain were filmed by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Over 1,000 people, from over 75 different ethnic, social, and religious organizations throughout the Chicago area, were filmed for the project. The result is a snapshot of Chicago's population at the start of a new millennium. John Manning and Alan Labb of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago managed the project to create the videos for Crown Fountain. Each subject was filmed for a total of 80 seconds, and at the end of the time period, they were asked to pretend to blow out candles on a birthday cake. This is when the spray of water comes out of their mouths on the fountain. Each video, which is randomly chosen by a computer, was slowed down and is shown for a total of 5 minutes. A second copy of each video was made, without the pursed lips, to be shown in the winter when the water feature is turned off. This allows Crown Fountain to remain active and interesting during winter, a time in Chicago when all other fountains are dormant.
