A complex mystery that alternates in time between 1935 and 1952. The storyline is haunting as we follow Sarah and her sister, raised by their father on a tobacco farm that is struggling to survive. Cold is how I felt reading about their childhood. The house was set in shadows, the father seemed to be unfeeling and the area was steeped in superstition that included one that said a girl half-way between her 15th and 16th years will at midnight see the man she will marry when she looks down a well. Sarah’s sister, Juna, is feared by many including her father. She is said to have witch-like properties. When Juna tells her father that she has been assaulted by a neighbor and their young brother kidnapped, the neighbor is convicted of a crime he did not commit. As an adult, Sarah, lives with the knowledge of what happened when her sister disappeared after giving birth to a girl born to Juna. The ending is unexpected. Roy has created a creepy story perfect for people who like a mystery with a very unexpected ending.

I loved Roy's other books but this one was boring. I could hardly wait to get to the end. I skimmed over some of the middle just to get finished. The skipping back and forth from one generation to the next got confusing and tedious. Hard to keep track of what was what.

I read this book because it won the Edgar Award this year for best novel. The previous three winners were all excellent. Sorry to say, this one did not live up. I found it tedious and closer to a romance or paranormal novel than a mystery. The ending was good, but I by that time couldn't wait to finish it.

I am a big fan of Roy. Secrets of two families touched by an evil that has passed between generations in a rural Kentucky town. Suspense builds until what happened is revealed.

I really, really wanted to love this book based on prior reviews. However, it was kind of slow and nothing much happened.

Did not hold my interest....a little simplistic.

This was quite good. It had an eerie quality to it that provided tons of atmosphere. The suspense builds slowly and steadily toward the end which catches you off guard. The author did a great job of giving us enough story to keep the pages turning while at the same time withholding enough information to make certain characters and situations a bit creepy.
