New York Times bestselling author Joseph Finder delivers his next breakneck stand-alone thriller about the secrets families can keep, and the danger of their discovery. When former investigative reporter Rick Hoffman loses his job, fiancée, and apartment, his only option is to move back into -- and renovate -- the home of his miserable youth, now empty and in decay since the stroke that put his father in a nursing home. As Rick starts to pull apart the old house, he makes an electrifying discovery -- millions of dollars hidden in the walls. It's enough money to completely transform Rick's life -- and everything he thought he knew about his father. Yet the more of his father's hidden past that Rick brings to light, the more dangerous his present becomes. Soon, he finds himself on the run from deadly enemies desperate to keep the past buried, and only solving the mystery of his father -- a man who has been unable to communicate, comprehend, or care for himself for almost 20 years -- will save Rick... if he can survive long enough to do it.

I really tried to like this book. The plot grabbed me. Why wouldn't it? Finding millions of dollars?? But after that the plot and characters got flimsy. Hard to follow and connect to.

A suspense thriller with a
interesting story line, makes
this a page turner. Enjoyable read.

I like Finder as a writer. This is certainly one of his better books.

Just ok.
this is the first Jospeh Finder book I read, and I would not read more. I picked it up because of the "NYT bestseller." I found the plot predictable and did not care about the characters.

As a huge fan of Joseph Finder, I'm a little disappointed in this one. It has suspense, action and thrills but the pace was a little slower than I'm used to in a Joseph Finder novel. Some of the twists were somewhat predictable and quite frankly it was not the 'can't put down' book that I anticipated. Still somewhat enjoyable and I haven't lost faith in Joseph Finder. Maybe once he gets back to the Nick Hellerman series he will once again be one of my can't miss authors.

I was a bit disappointed in this novel by an author who should be able to do better. An interesting plotline, and the story-telling is compelling enough that I never considered not finishing it, but at the end of it all I felt there were too many holes in the story, too many unlikely scenarios, and a main character, Rick Hoffman, who wasn't very likeable (and even a bit stupid). Needs some strong editing to make it smooth and believable. And it never was clear to me how the whole kickback business really worked, I couldn't follow the money no matter how hard I tried.

Liked it OK , but didn't think it was as good as his previous books.

This book is kind of a toss up, the main character being somewhat shallow and not particularly endearing. Writing was somewhat offputting, not really gripping the reader. Has a cheery ending, but a little too TV melodrama-like for this reader. [But glad to know that most Bostonians appear to be crooked! Logical given the recent lead-up game to the Super Bowl and those inflated footballs!]
