BP Bridge, Spanning Columbus Drive, November 22, 2003
The final box girder is lowered into place by a crane as Columbus Drive is closed to traffic for a 12-hour period. The structural steel for the Bridge was made by Littell Steel of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and two different methods were used. Box girders were used to span Columbus Drive, and huge pipes, two inches thick and 20 inches in diameter, were used for the approaches. The steel pipes had to be specially formed with heat-treatment into the correct shape for the Bridge, twisting and curving back on itself, like a rollercoaster.
