BP Bridge, Spanning Columbus Drive, November 22, 2003Online Images - 2003-11-22
On November 22, 2003, Columbus Drive was shut down to traffic in both directions for 12 hours to allow the Bridge's spans over Columbus Drive to be put into place. Three box girders were hoisted into place by a huge 360-ton crane as welders secured the girders to one another, and to the eastern and western approach ramps, like a giant jigsaw puzzle. In this photograph the central box girder is being lowered into place on top of the central pier that had been built in the median strip of Columbus Drive earlier. The crane used to hoist the box girders, at 360 tons, was so heavy that before it could be brought on site to lift the girders, the roof of the underground parking garage had to be shored up by screw-jacks, or Columbus Drive would have collapsed under its weight.
