The cover gave me the screaming heebie jeebies but then I have lived through a major earthquake (and thousands of little and middle-sized ones) so the sight of a bookshelf above a bed makes my heart pound and not in a good way. Ilse Crawford is very influential and looking at this book you can see why. The interiors are very beautiful but they look like actual people actually live in them. Rich, beautiful people but still human.

Interesting photos, carefully edited, captioned and laid out, accompanied by some uneven and repetitive writing. One of the last chapters is called 'Design that can be smelt, heard, and felt' and this one sparkled with insights about retail design in the age of internet shopping, branding, & building in room for designs to grow and change over time. In the pattern for this book, this intro is followed by the projects mentioned in that chapter in greater depth (a format that works well, but does contribute to the repetitiveness of the writing) - then, incredibly, a closing essay by architect Edwin Heathcote that states Ilse Crawford doesn't talk about such things as design and branding. What was I just reading!?
