Both an English professor and a high-stakes gambler, Jim Bennett bets it all when he borrows from a gangster and offers his own life as collateral. Always one step ahead, Bennett pits his creditor against the operator of a gambling ring and leaves his dysfunctional relationship with his wealthy mother in his wake. He plays both sides, immersing himself in an illicit, underground world while garnering the attention of Frank, a loan shark with an interest in Bennett's future.

During the movie I was tempted to stop watching it few times. But, after the movie finished, I concluded that I actually liked it. I think it's worth watching.

Raunchy and completely surreal. (i.e. Hollywood Horseshit)
Also, the author's completely BS pontificating about "life", through Wahlberg's character and John Goodman's character "lectures", is annoying, to say the least.
However, as horridly disgusting as the 3 bad guys are defined, those characters are actually likeable, the way they're done. LOL

I found this movie boring almost from the beginning. Did not watch much of it.

At one point in THE GAMBLER, Brie Larson's character points out that Mark Wahlberg's character is someone with no problems that has to invent them instead just to be sour. That is exactly the problem with this swollen pustule of a film, swelling and throbbing, ready to burst its pseudo-intellectual bull over everything. The protagonist is all 'woe is me', but his life could be pretty great if he wasn't such a miserable whiner with a superiority complex and a penchant for pitting people against each other. Screw happiness, though. In lieu of that, he orchestrates his own demise for reasons unknown. I absolutely hated this arrogant and ungrateful numb-skull. As a film-watching experience, it wasn't anything like THE WOLF OF WALL STREET or GOODFELLAS, those truly great antihero tales, where you're rooting for the bad guy to win while waiting for him to fail. No, instead Wahlberg's character doesn't have any motivation at all and I became fed up with his asinine behaviour within twenty minutes and had to force myself to finish the film. THE GAMBLER just sucks out your soul. If you hadn't guessed already, I don't recommend it.

After reading over the other comments Im relieved to know Im not missing something. Total waste of time as there seems to be no point. Whalburg's charachter doesn't jive with whats known about addicts...they do care what happens them & their family. Overall it just sucked.

"The Gambler", Mark Wahlberg, 2014, is drab to the point of depressing. Haven't we seen this character who bets his life on the roll or a die or the color of a card? I didn't want to see John Goodman's body when he was 21 let alone at a fat 62. Self-destructive behavior made into a movie that is supposed to be entertaining? instructive? I don't recommend this movie to anyone.

I really did not see the point of this movie - an hour was enough.

Not one of Wahlberg's better movies.

Hard to get in to at first, particularly due to Wahlberg's delivery of pyscho-babble apathy which really only applies to himself. Great supporting cast and after a while you start to see a little bit of everyone in Wahlberg's character. He may be a despicable, self-destructive loser, but he isn't entirely wrong either.

I have tried three times to get through this, falling asleep after 20 minutes, then again after another 15 minutes, then after a day trying again from where I left off and turning it off...there is absolutely nothing going on in this movie...nothing !!!...full of blah blah blah I don't care about my life or living...why?...who the hell knows....but most importantly...NOBODY CARES...brutal.
Oh and Jessica Lange???..nice facework lady, you look like something out of Star Wars.
