Like others here, I found out about this through David Foster Wallace. By now I've read almost everything by Johnson, but this is his best work. Bleak, visceral, and you feel scummy while reading it. I love vicariousness!

I found it very depressing, crude and completely sounding like he was high when he wrote it. Guess it was supposed to reflect the reality of addiction. Too much for me. Others like

Recovering, Intoxication and its Aftermath much more to my liking....recommended highly!

Short. Easy reading, but there is a lot there. Distressing & inspiring.

Well written and compelling if just a bit bleak.

Note to self: David Foster Wallace praised Angels, though dumped on his subsequent works ...except Jesus's Son, which has a cult following

Collection of short stories around the same anti-hero, drug addict character. Surprisingly touching and gentle. Highly recommended.
