Examines the dawn of the comic book genre and its progenitors, as well as the evolution of the characters that leapt from the pages over the last 70 years and their ongoing worldwide cultural impact. It chronicles how these 'disposable diversions' were subject to intense government scrutiny for their influence on American children and how they were created in large part by immigrants whose fierce loyalty to a new homeland laid the foundation of a multi-billion-dollar industry.

Not deep, but it does have some good interviews with artists and writers. The biggest hole is that it doesn't go far beyond the DC/Marvel world, and doesn't mention the explosion of alternative publishers in the 80s, like First or Eclipse, or people like Scott McCloud. No mention of the growing influence of Japanese or European comics (except by inference when Alan Moore's Watchmen comes up).

I've watched at least four different documentaries on comics and would have to rank this one as the best.

Would've liked more focus on the Fantastic Four. Without that team, characters such as The Hulk,
Spider-Man, Iron Man, and the
X-Men wouldn't exist. The creation of Image Comics was mentioned, but not Marvel's Heroes Reborn event. That surprised me.

This is a unique and fascinating history of the superhero and of comics themselves. It delves into the relevancy of heroes such as Superman and Captain America, of the political ramifications of Spiderman.

The Death of Gwen Stacey and the Death of Superman and how these two deaths changed comics and the characters themselves.

It talks about the new wave of comic books in each new era and how at the heart comic books reflect the voices and ideas of their readers.

Anyone who loves comics should watch this wonderful documentary.
