In this delightful parable, a kingdom within a painting is divided into three castes: the impeccably colored Alldunns, the incomplete Halfies, and the barley outlined Sketchies, who are treated as outcasts. Chastised for her forbidden love of the dashing Ramo, Claire runs away into the cursed forest. Ramo and her best friend Lola journey after her, crossing over the boundaries of the forest only to arrive at the very edge of the painting where they tumble through the canvas and into the painter's studio. The abandoned workspace is strewn with paintings, watch containing its own vividly animated world and characters and in a feast for both eyes and the imagination, they explore picture after picture in a quest to discover just what the painter has in mind for his creations.

Welcome to the Metaphorical World. The interior world of a Matisse/Modigliani/(early) Picasso painting comes to life, revealing a racist totalitarian kingdom, and in a more uplifting spirit later on, God’s relation to the created world. Along the way, we encounter Sketchies, a repeating battle, a never-ending dance, and characters that jump from painting to painting. Interesting animation too, and a lush soundtrack that sounds suitably Debussy-eque for this French movie. Five stars.

Really lovely and intriguing. An interesting story and beautiful to watch.
Much better than I expected from that DVD cover photo.
Probably good for age 12 and up?

While the artwork is beautiful, the story is a bit lacking, and the characters are one-dimensional.

Dessin animé simple mais intéressant avec un bon message. Bon pour les enfants et les grands.

Amazing film for the creativity of artwork that is reminiscent of Picasso. The colors seem flat, but the animation has a 3D weight to it. There's a dream sequence that recalls Chagall. The music is also wonderful, switching from classical for the castle scenes to something a little wilder with an accordion for a scene during the Venetian carnival. Very enjoyable! The extras include a "making of" that is interesting and several trailers of other animated films that demonstrate the exciting range of talent in the world.
