What would you do if you discovered a secret that changed everything around you? The people, the world or even our society in general? If you think either of these things, you are moments away from cracking open “Olive’s Ocean”, written by Kevin Henkes.
Twelve year old, Martha Boyle and her family are preparing for their annual trip to the Pacific Ocean to visit Martha’s favourite grandmother, Godbee. It’s her most favourite place to visit on Earth. Olive Barstow, a girl in Martha’s class died in a car accident while riding her bike a few months back. She was a shy and extremely quiet student; no one seemed to notice her. Remembering what happened to Olive scares Martha. Will Martha ever learn to get along with her family?
Considering multiple viewpoints, my favourite character is Martha. Though she sees love at first sight, me and Martha Boyle have lots in common. For example, Martha enjoys writing. Martha writes about her emotions, things going on around her and her family. Godbee is also one of my favourite characters. She supports Martha and admires her a lot.
The target audience/age group I consider is appropriate for this book is ages 12 and up. It may have some mild language use, but it does teach an important lesson: “family is always there for you, and no one can replace them.”
