"It is a time of celebration in the Pingkang li, where imperial scholars and bureaucrats mingle with beautiful courtesans. At the center is the Lotus Palace, home of the most exquisite courtesans in China. Maidservant Yue-ying is not one of those beauties. Street-smart and practical, she's content to live in the shadow of her infamous mistress--until she meets the aristocratic playboy Bai Huang."--Provided by publisher.

Review excerpt: "'The Lotus Palace' is a historical romance/mystery set in Tang Dynasty China. It is the first in the short but fantastic 'Pingkang Li Mysteries' series. I adore the setting, the characters, and the delicate way that the issue of consent is handled given the many forms of inequality within the society in which our characters live. This is a slow-paced book, but one that allows a relationship to mature over time in a believable way despite serious obstacles."

Beautifully complex and culturally rich world setting, intelligent characters with great depth and an interesting, well-paced plot. The book has all the markings to be a favorite of many and has left me seriously impressed with the author's talent for storytelling.

Recommended for HR lovers, especially those who would like to get away from European Regency/Victorian HR.
