For Christmas, soft-spoken Lady Jenny Windham craves the freedom to pursue her artistic ambitions, though it will mean scandalizing her ducal parents and abandoning all hope of a family of her own. She confides her plans to successful artist Elijah Harrison when he's commissioned to paint a portrait of her small nephews, because assisting Elijah will bring Jenny that much closer to her heart's desire--won't it? Elijah Harrison finds in his unlikely assistant not only an inspiring muse and unappreciated talent, but also a lovely and passionate woman. If Elijah supports Jenny's career, his own professional interests will suffer, but more significantly, he will lose Jenny forever. Both Jenny and Elijah must choose between true love and a lifelong dream.

Luscious! “Lady Genevieve Windham didn’t recognize Elijah Harrison with his clothes on, or she had reserves of self-possession he could only envy.” With this opening salvo, we are entered into secrets as Elijah seeks shelter from a passing winter storm. Genevieve (Jenny) knows him as a life model in a painting class, but he wasn’t supposed to recognize her. A lady wasn’t expected to have a passion for painting that might lead to an auspicious career. Jenny’s doting family are oblivious to her talent and seem to pity her near-spinster state. But her parents suspect that having handsome Elijah, now a celebrated painter, near at hand to complete some last-minute Christmas portraits might tempt Jenny out of spinster status. Despite their sizzling connection, Jenny is convinced that the only way to further her artistic ambitions lies in Paris. It would be lonely, but sacrifices must be made for career, right?

“What’s a critique session?” Amanda asked.

A critique session was when you put your heart in the middle of a busy thoroughfare and hoped at least some of the passing traffic didn’t roll directly over it.

Mr. Harrison smiled down at Amanda. “A critique session is when people who share a similar passion try to help each other improve their work. Like when you read your papa’s poetry and suggest a better rhyme to him.” (p. 31)
