Why are some people able to make positive change while others remain the same?

In his international bestseller, The Happiness Advantage , Harvard trained researcher Shawn Achor described why happiness is the precursor to greater success. This book is about what comes before both. Because before we can be happy or successful, we need to first develop the ability to see that positive change is possible. Only once we learn to see the world through a more positive lens can we summon all our motivation, emotion, and intelligence to achieve our personal and professional goals.

In Before Happiness , Achor reveals five actionable, proven strategies for changing our lens to positive:

- The Most Valuable Reality: See a broader range of ideas and solutions by changing the details on which your brain chooses to focus
- Success Mapping: Set goals oriented around the things in life that matter to you most, whether career advancement or family or making a difference in the world
- The X-spot: Use success accelerants to propel you more quickly towards those goals, whether finishing a marathon, reaching a sales target, learning a language, or losing 10 pounds
- Noise-Canceling : Boost the signal pointing you to opportunities and possibilities that others miss
- Positive Inception : Transfer these skills to your team, your employees, and everyone around you

By mastering these strategies, you'll create an renewable source of positivity, motivation, and engagement that will allow you to reach your fullest potential in everything you do.

This book is incredible! The depth, the knowledge, the connections the author makes, the rhythm and paste are all excellent. I must say I was very impressed and learned a LOT. Not to mention the humor sneaked into it, which makes it also a fun book to listen to. Also, very well narrated! To be honest, I think I'll listen to it again just to be able process all this information a bit better and then try to implement it in my everyday life and business. Thank you Shawn Achor, you are a genius!

I'd rate this at no more than 3 stars.

The content is more academic than it is popular presentation for the reader.

Apparently Achor's TED talk is one of the most popular viewed and the show/s lecture style public presentations he did on PBS public TV were enjoyable. Is that show on DVD?

The Reference pages/Notes on the Chapters include mostly articles from many research based journals for academic publication.

Read this book before "The Happiness Advantage", which he references a few times throughout. He does a fantastic job of providing real life examples and practical ways to improve your reality to one that is more positive and works towards improvements across many areas of ones life - personal or professional.

A couple of my favourite quotes:

"The fear of being wrong can lead to perpetually skewed decision making" and the line from Shakesphere (and Tupac), "A coward dies a thousand times, a soldier dies but once". Simple, yet effective ways to remind us that the lens we view things through has a tremendous impact on the subsequent result.

Great read and I look forward to reading "The Happiness Advantage" and other titles by Achor.

I really enjoyed this book. There were a lot of eye-opening research data from past to present. At the end of each chapter, he summarizes and offers suggestions and practices. It's fun reading this and I can't wait to get my hands on his other titles.

In 'Before Happiness', Shawn Achor describes how our perception of reality, and whether we believe positive change is possible in the first place, makes a huge difference in our pursuit of happiness and success. Other books may just make a list of different activities someone can do to be happy or successful, but Achor really gets to the root of the problem and helps readers develop a strong foundation before doing those activities. I think this is a great book to read if you really want to understand how to change your life for the better.
