I have seen Ben place his nose meticulously into the shallow dampness of a deer’s hoofprint and shut his eyes as if listening. But it is smell he is listening to.

Comment
Add a CommentI love dogs so the topic of the poems are sweet. However, I was very disappointed in the quality of the poetry. At one point, I thought this could be in a greeting card instead of being written by a Pulitzer-prize-winning poet. Usually Mary Oliver uses descriptions of nature to draw her reader in a deeper truth. Here the only message was: dogs good.
Wonderful line drawings. probably not what you would give to a cat-person friend though.
If you have ever owned a dog you will recognize the dogs in her poetry. Fabulous book.
Open the book to any poem and read it aloud to your friend, dog or human. Enchanting, poignant and a bridge to a conversation. I am sorry dogs can't read. Yet I they probably know she is one of their biggest fans. I know I am.
If you love poetry and dogs, you will love this nice collection of memories of Oliver's dogs and her reflection on nature and the world.
As always, Oliver delivers a fantastic collection of poetry that speaks to me on a deep level. This absolutely captures how I feel about dogs I've adopted, fostered, and helped rescue.
Whether writing from the perspective of a dog or sharing an observation about them, Oliver gets at the heart of dog companionship: abundant joy.
Mary Oliver beautifully articulates how I feel about my canine companions. This is a lovely collection.
even if you don't like poems, if you love dogs you will like these
While I love Mary Oliver's poems in general, this book really stands out for me. Beautiful poems.
