He receives curiously little help from his colleagues on the force, but his wife, Charlotte, gleans from her social engagements startling insights into the women in both cases. And slowly both Thomas and Charlotte begin to reach the same sinister and deeply dangerous truth.

I like all of Anne Perry's books. I wish this one was available from either the Seattle Public Library or the King County Library System as a downloadable audio, or as an audio book on cds. I think she did fine with exposing the sorts of vile beliefs that go with racism, but I am not a minority person, other than being a left handed redhead, so am not an expert. However one of the things I like about Perry is how she "illustrates" the sexism, racism, and classism in her books. Also the reader of her books is usually Davina Porter, a fine voice actor, to whom I greatly enjoy listening.

For those who like the victorian background and low tech murder mystery gendre, this is a fun read but the author is playing with some very serious themes in 'jew hating' victorian England. I did not feel she treats the implications of the Victorian prejudices with any kind of analysis in hindsight and misses the opportunity to make her murder mystery tales socially relevant for this century. For this reason I think the book is disturbing and I would not recommend it to most readers except as an example of poor writing.
