I'm well acquainted with this music for unaccompanied violin by J.S. Bach through many recordings by violinists that I have listened to over the years. This recording by mandolinist Chris Thile rises to the level any of those violin recorded versions in terms of virtuosity and interpretation. Sure the instruments can't compare when it comes to sustaining and sonority, the violin wins out, but there is something refreshing to hearing these pieces played on the mandolin. Give it a listen!
This is simply sublime.
