In a rare treat, this historical romance offers a female rogue as heroine. The daring exploits of the unfortunately-named Lady Imaculata Anne Egremont are understood as an attempt to deflect her father’s predatory attentions. Anne adopts her middle name and a pseudonym when she escapes to the Welsh countryside as housekeeper for Major Ripton-Jones, or Gareth. The disheveled one-armed veteran is not as decrepit as expected and cleans up well, especially after a dressing-down from Anne about his over-imbibing. His own reputation has been ruined after the unsolved murder of his former fiancée. Anne decides to help clear his name, but encounters resistance in the form of unexplained accidents. Anne also fears the Major will cast her aside if he knows her true identity. Warning: steamy scenes ahead! The Major’s struggle with alcoholism is handled sensitively and realistically. The role of The London List, a gossip weekly run by a woman posing as a man, provides a fascinating backdrop with the promise of many more scandalous revelations in the series.
