She'd love to stop having to save the universe on short notice and settle into a long-term relationship, but before she does that, she needs to stop ripping every expensive piece of clothing she owns, control her temper and stop throwing defendants through walls and finally find appropriately shaded green hued cover-up for the Hulk-sized pimple on her chin. The She-Hulk Diaries is the hysterical and brutally honest account of one year in the life of Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk as she tries to get her act together.

Not a good introduction to the character of She-Hulk. In this book she is portrayed as flighty, superficial, and sex-crazed and lacks the sharp wit, wry sense of humor, and empowerment of the comic series written by Charles Soule. If you're looking for good She-Hulk stories, seek out Soule's work.

I described my reaction to this book as the feeling you have when you're eating Cheetos or Doritos or some other highly processed snack food. You know it isn't good, yet you feel compelled to keep going anyway. If I could have just turned my brain off, I probably would have enjoyed this silly, fast-paced, Bridget-Jones-meets-superheroes tale - but alas, the poor thing kept chiming in and reminding me how ridiculous the entire plot was.

I'll say right up front that I'm not someone who follows She-Hulk or Marvel, so coming into this novel I didn't have any expectations of the way the characters would be.

It was a fun book that followed a lot of the standard chick-lit tropes, but did them well. It was refreshing that Jennifer Walters had a demanding job she was good at, since that is the element most often missing from the chick lit and romance genres. Even after some things got tiresome - the diary aspect, freaking out over the main love interest - I was still intrigued by how the different storylines would intersect, such as what exactly the omnipresence of Joocey Jooce had to do with anything else in the book.

Enjoyable. And great cover.

Marta Acosta's The She-Hulk Diaries wonderfully captures Marvel's fun-loving jade giantess and more importantly, breathes romantic-heroine-style life into her alter-ego, lawyer extraordinnaire, Jennifer Walters. Like Allison Sweeney's The Star Attraction, The She-Hulk Diaries falls squarely into the chick-lit category, but it's chick-lit for comic geeks, and this comic geek thoroughly enjoyed every page. From the frequent ribbing of Tony Stark, to the Machiavellian plot of Victor Von Doom, The She-Hulk Diaries has enough comic book adventure to offset the woman-seeking-love trope to make for a fun read. Personally, I would love Acosta to try her hand at a similar novel starring fashion heiress Janet Van Dyne, aka the Winsome Wasp!
