"Mary Robinson, who was the first woman President of Ireland, began to rebel against her family's expectations from an early age. As she grew up, she made several unusual choices on her way to earning a degree in law and dedicating her career to social reform. She specialised in the civil rights of women and of marginalised citizens before serving in the Irish legislature. After her term as Ireland's President, she worked as the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights. In Everybody Matters, Robinson eloquently presents an account of her life in terms of the ideal of human rights that has guided her since her youth." Mary Robinson did spend her life giving voice to those not being heard. I liked reading about her youth and seeing some of the things that happened that helped her develop into the woman she became. This is a woman I respect and want to emulate.
