Dozens of Utah DVD retailers attracted unwanted attention from Hollywood heavyweights when, in the name of conservative family values, they began sanitizing films of sex, nudity, profanity, and violence. Outraged over the unauthorized editing of their work, prominent filmmakers began to speak out, thrusting the two groups into an intense legal, theoretical, and moral battle that would last six years before coming to a shocking conclusion.

Hey, all you movie fans! - In this day and age of over-the-top violence, gore, sex, and profanity in films - Are you really ready for "sanitized" cinema??

I mean, I hope you think the same as I do here - 'Cause I cannot see the point, at all, of watching a film like Caligula (with all of its sex edited out), or 28 Days Later (with all of its gore edited out) - Can you?

But, apparently, in the state of Utah, the ultra-conservative, Mormonized folks there want to watch these sorts of "sanitized" films so badly that for 8 years (2000-2008) (before copyright infringement laws were being challenged in court) it was, indeed, a million-dollar business.

Competently written and directed by Andrew James and Joshua Ligairi - "Cleanflix" is a very insightful and informative documentary that offers the viewer a well-balanced argument for or against sanitized cinema (whose story inevitably escalates into quite an eye-opening scandal).

*Trivia note* - In the film The Wolf of Wall Street the word f*ck is spoken 569 times. So, that means, within its 180-minute running time, that one word is uttered about 3x a minute.

This story may take two viewings to fully digest and understand all the complexities and arguments. The subject matter reminded me a lot of a documentary called "The People vs. George Lucas." Both films grapple with the idea of art ownership and who the art belongs to once it has reached a certain critical mass. I'm not sure where I stand in the debate, but I'm glad that there is a conversation. The other element to this doc concerns censorship, which is always a volatile arena in the U.S. I would recommend this film to anyone with an interest in any of the subjects I have mentioned or if you just want a pretty good look at a controversial issue.

This movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year. Not too bad---good performance. I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.

Interesting doc about censorship & artistic ownership with an almost unbelievable jaw dropping twist. I don't mean to be offensive folks but Mormons are a bit crazy (seriously what is the point of watching a violent film with the deaths cut out of it? I'm not defending or attacking films, or beliefs but seriously folks if watching sex or killing is against your religion, then chose other movies - because actually you don't have the right to remove the Matrix's body count because Mormon elders say don't watch any more than you'd have the right to remove the Mona Lisa's smile if it offended you.)
They scare the crap out of me (they can be as fanatical and dangerous as the worst religious zealots of any stripe, they just hide it better.)

Well worth watching.

Here's the $64,000.00 question... Did he or didn't he?
