Rumspringa is the time when Amish teens are allowed to experience life without the rules. It's an exciting time of personal discovery and growth before committing to the church. But when a young teen disappears without a trace, the carefree fun comes to an abrupt and sinister end, and fear spreads through the community like a contagion. A missing child is a nightmare to all parents, and never more so than in the Amish community, where family ties run deep. When the search for the presumed runaway turns up a dead body, the case quickly becomes a murder investigation. And chief of Police Kate Burkholder knows that in order to solve this case she will have to call upon everything she has to give not only as a cop, but as a woman whose own Amish roots run deep. Kate and state agent, John Tomasetti, delve into the lives of the missing teen and discover links to cold cases that may go back years. But will Kate piece together all the parts of this sinister puzzle in time to save the missing teen and the Amish community from a devastating fate? Or will she find herself locked in a fight to the death with a merciless killer?

#4 in series

This is Castillo's 4th mystery featuring Kate Burkholder, a formerly-Amish chief of police in rural Ohio. Kate had left the Plain Life and her hometown when she was a teen, lived in Cleveland, worked as acop for many years, then moved back. She has unique skills to handle life in her equally Amish and "Englisher" town, understanding both populations well. And she speaks Pennsylvania Dutch! In this mystery, teenage Amish girls are going missing, and a hidden pattern - perhaps going back many years - emerges. Perhaps not as edge-of-your-seat as the previous titles in the series, but Castillo has become - with a relatively few number of books - (almost but not quite) like Nevada Barr for me: dependably exciting plotlines, intelligent and interesting characters, and above average writing. Can't wait for the next Kate - especially to see how her relationship with Tomasetti progresses.

This is the fourth book in the Kate Burkholder series set in Amish country in Ohio. Kate, the police chief, was raised in the faith, but was excommunicated. She still has conflicts about her loyalty to the Amish community versus the "English" as they call the outsiders. The mysteries usually involve the Amish people as victims and / or perpetrators of crimes. The books are nice, solid mystery / police procedural reads. As with all series I always recommend starting with the first in the set, as the history of the main character explains her subsequent behaviors / conflicts. If you are wondering.... a good source to find the first in almost any author's series is " Fantastic Fiction" a GREAT website!!!!

My favorite of the Kate Burkholder series so far. Good suspense, and the perpetrator and motive were surprises. The ending sets up an intriguing scenario for a future book, as well.

Interesting background.. Amish culture.. Well-written.. I just found the ending too graphic and violent.. probably not more so than other mystery books..

Another strong book in this mystery/thriller series. Liked how the setting changed slightly too (otherwise I would think this small town must be the murder capital of the world). Linda Castillo does a good job keeping you guessing as to who the killer is as well. Strongly written main characters. Can't wait to read more of these.

A very good book. You wouldn't have guessed the ending.

I think Castillo has exhausted the Ohio Amish as the setting for her crime thrillers. This book barely managed to have a plot that held together until the end, even with the added bonus of the complicated romance between the two main characters and the predictable twist at the end
