Ruby Sparks starts out like just another cute fantasy about a fictional character come to life; but then it gets more interesting. It's something like The Stepford Wives turned on its head: Calvin, a lonely, reclusive writer trying to write a second novel to equal his hugely successful first, manufactures his ideal woman, but the experience is strangely unsatisfying. It becomes one of painful self-discovery for Calvin. Written by the very clever Zoe Kazan, who plays the title character. Some difficult scenes, but worth seeing it through.
A Trojan Horse of a romance that explores domestic violence. A sad, introverted author writes about his dream girl; to his great surprise, Pygmalion-fashion, she comes to life. He learns that whatever he writes, she will perform—even if it makes her unhappy. Now the question is: Will he have the strength to grow up and renounce his power, seeing her as a separate person, or will he remain content with his Frankendoll?
Very unique , loved the main characters. Romantic.
Enjoyable.
An okay movie. The premise grows a bit tedious after a while--or did for me anyway.
Clever and imaginative work of film. Hard to believe it was written by such a young person, but what an imagination!
Overlooked gem.
This is a good movie to watch if you interpreted it in the way that I interpreted it. My thought was that this was a movie that was made with the intent of deconstructing the 'Manic Pixie Dream Girl' trope and demonstrating how women are more complex than one man's perception and expectations of her. So in that case I would say it is worth seeing.
Imaginative. Interesting plot twists and slightly offbeat characters. Recommended.
a contemporary twist on the Pygmalion story ... the story is a little uneven, but everyone is very earnest in their portrayals. It would have been more whimsical if there had not been so many fbombs, but it is definitely worth seeing.
