If you think world peace is a naive concept, Paul K. Chappell's very
existence will give you pause. It's not enough to say that Chappell - a West
Point graduate and Iraq War veteran - is a soldier turned peace leader.
Experiencing a traumatic upbringing and growing up mixed race in Alabama,
he's a young man forged by violence, rage, and racism into a living weapon
for peace. By unlocking the mysteries of human nature, he shows how the
muscles of hope, empathy, appreciation, conscience, reason, discipline, and
curiosity give us the power to end the wars between countries, our ongoing
war with nature, and the war in our hearts.

An easy read, if highly repetitious. Maybe he doubts the capacity of his readers to follow his arguments, so he repeats them in several chapters, occasionally building on them for new purposes, but it becomes tiring. I lost track of the number of people or episodes in his life that he claims saved him or were the turning point in his life.
Despite the preceding comments, I agree with most of his general argument. The book is a nice statement of common sense, even if a bit verbose. The biggest challenge for me, and what may have soured me on the book, is his continual reference to military life as central to his philosophy. I understand that his West Point experience and his career as an officer were dramatically different from my experience as a draftee. Still, his statements about Army values and goals bear no resemblance to any values and goals I and the hundreds of draftees and enlisted with whom I served experienced. Perhaps some who have served as enlisted personnel more recently could offer their opinions on this aspect of the book.
