Here is a deftly written thriller that is also a "deep and moody" (NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW) journey through the dark side of Japan's consumer-crazed society. Ordinary people plunge into insurmountable personal debt and fall prey to dangerous webs of underground creditors-so dangerous, in fact, that murder may be the only way out. A beautiful young woman vanishes, and the detective quickly finds she is not whom she claims to be. Is she a victim, a killer, or both? In a country that tracks its citizens at every turn, how can two women claim the same identity and then disappear without a trace?

Absolutely gripping police procedural. Perfect on plot, setting & characters. At the heart of the story is a question 'How far will you go to get the fancy lifestyle you want but could never earn enough to support?'. Received a starred review from Publishers Weekly.

This is a enthralling mystery that will keep you reading until the last page, there is terrific characters you will feel you know and the whole feel of the story will haunt you .
This is not a book about the samuri. anime pop stars, salary men, all the standards of many novels This is a book about a side of Japanese life we rarely heard about. The owners of small beauty salons, five seat bars and tiny busineses. This is the story about everyday people in Japan just trying to get by. Mind you "Japan" still get in. How often in the West do you get a souvenier photo for pricing burial plots? Or have to worry about your family registration? Great book.
