The astonishing saga of polar explorer Ernest Shackleton's survival for over a year on the ice-bound Antarctic seas, as Time magazine put it, "defined heroism." Alfred Lansing's scrupulously researched and brilliantly narrated book -- with over 200,000 copies sold -- has long been acknowledged as the definitive account of the Endurance's fateful trip. To write their authoritative story, Lansing consulted with ten of the surviving members and gained access to diaries and personal accounts byeight others. The resulting book has all the immediacy of a first-hand account, expanded with maps and illustrations especially for this edition.

This book grew on me until, with an intense rush of relief, it brought me to tears. With bravery, integrity, and fortitude beyond measure, this is more than just a survival story. Instead it reflects a unfathomable feat, only possible because of this crew’s immense ability to preserve and respect a brotherhood, a community, and a fellowship.

Their ship caught and crushed by pack ice, a 1914 Antarctic expedition is left stranded at the bottom of the world. Against incredible odds, leader Sir Ernest Shackleton leads every one of this men to safety, first over the ice, then around it in their tiny rowboats. Despite its age (originally published in 1959) this is still the most thrilling account of the best survival story in history.

Fantastic, true story of human endurance. Not for young children.

An absolute classic that everyone should read. These men proved that what thee human spirit can accomplish is truly amazing.

(Side note: you might want to read this in the middle of a long, hot summer, when you'll appreciate the cold more.)

This was a riveting survival story, similar to Unbroken in its intensity. Highly recommended!

Totally Immersive and Harrowing Story Of Survival 'Endurance The Greatest Adventure Story Ever Told' exceeded all my expectations for an exciting white-knuckle read. The author does an excellent job of drawing the reader into the scene,so that you feel the cold, wet and hunger, and the terror of being hunted by a huge leopard seal[you may remember the one in the film -Eight Below].

These men are outstanding how they were able to keep their morale so high, despite the circumstances.

The photos were also wonderful, and I greatly appreciated the fact that although this was a book about seamen,it avoid the use of profanity, ecept for just a few isolated instances, which made it a nice inoffensive read.

This is a book that once read will not be easily forgotten. Highly recommended for fans of adventure/survival stories.
