WOW! This version by The Australian Ballet with Lisa Pavane is absolutely the most wonderful, exciting, and entertaining version of Coppelia that I have ever seen! The music and energy from the beginning to the end is lively and upbeat. The set and costumes are fabulous and the dancing is unbelievable. Lisa Pavane and everyone are sheer delights to watch perform and you can tell they are having a wonderful time. We must have watched this version at least 5x! The second act is my daughters favorite and she gets excited in the same way every time she watches it, dancing and miming all of her favorite parts. She loves this story and we had first tried to watch Coppelia by the Paris Ballet and I'm sorry to say that even though the dancing was great, everything else was so bland, bare bones, and dark...having basically no set & very simple costumes. Plus, the story was hard to follow if you had no prior knowledge of what the ballet is about. I found both of our attentions wandering during the first act and we had no interest at all in the second act. I figured it would not hurt to give this version a try and I'm very delighted that we did because it excited and blew us away both at the same time. Also, the lead dancer Lisa is now the Director of Australian Ballet School (ABS). I'm sure to expect great things of the newer generations of dancers under her guidance!
