I have an intense, bordering on irrational, dislike for Ariel Pink and his Haunted Graffiti (how exactly does graffiti get haunted?). Anointed by some as some kind of pop savant (notably Pitchfork), Pink was a prolific lo-fi "artist" whose early albums were put out by Animal Collective and then, inexplicably, made the leap to storied indie label 4AD. So, yeah, he's in the same company as the Pixies, the Birthday Party, and Cocteau Twins. It's partly that I can't stand his music, which draws on 70s AM gold, dinky 80s synth-pop, outsider art, and lo-fi experimentation and, even when the production is a little slicker, sounds like it was recorder on a kids' tape player and then run through a malfunctioning walkie talkie. Despite the title, there is little mature about this as one of the first lines is "You sank my battleship" and another has the immortal chorus "You're so baby (baby)." "Schnitzel Boogie" sounds like a Zappa title, but there's none of Zappa's subversive wit. It's weird without being the least bit interesting and his vocals, which can kindly be described as childlike, are insufferable, but maybe it's ironic, so they're, like supposed to be crappy? If that's not enough, he seems like a real tool, as you can read in the article below:

Sink the Pink!

Meh. Kind of like Magnetic Fields without the wit or melody. Or songwriting ability. Self-indulgent and uninspired. Skip it.
Listen to Magnetic Fields instead.

Terrific album, indeed!
