Written by the author of a weekly nationally syndicated sex advice column, it charts his decision, along with his boyfriend, to adopt a child in a society tremendously uneasy with gay adoption. When the couple are presented with a child in bad need of parenting, they are caught up in a drama that extends well outside the confines of their immediate world. The story confronts homophobia and describes the processes of falling in love, getting older and wiser.

Top Picks: Advice Columnists

When I think about why I love reading so much, the quote “We read to know we're not alone” (from William Nicholson's Shadowlands) always comes to mind first. Rarely does that line ring more true than when I relate to a story shared in an advice column. With the fresh start the new year offers, I'm drawn to a variety of advice columnists who encourage a new approach to the same old problems. … (more)

If I had to say my favorite thing about the recent surge in audio book publishing, it’d be the reboot of beloved backlist titles that you couldn’t have listened to five years ago. This summer, Penguin Audio has given us the gift of Dan Savage reading his 1999 tale of adopting a kid with his then-boyfriend (now husband) Terry Miller. In the same confrontational yet lovable voice that has made him a renowned sex columnist and founder of the It Gets Better project, Savage writes frankly about their experiences navigating the open adoption process as a gay couple in the nineties. It’s an entertaining and emotional story, made even better by Savage’s excellent new narration. When done well, I’m such a sucker for people reading their own memoirs to me on audio. Savage nails it! Best yet, he tells you all the stuff “they don’t tell you” about adoption, making this a legit reference tool for anyone who’s got babies on the brain.

This book is written with honesty, respect and clarity. I am thankful for this story.

Wonderful book by sex columnist Dan Savage (known for Savage Love). How does this decidedly unsentimental guy move towards raising a child with his partner.

The adoption process itself is full of unexpected twists but what it does to the couple is even more intriguing.

A recommended book for all people considering adopting for its unvarnished view of the bureaucratic and emotional process.
