Dawn & the other identifiable kids are all at least a little lovable in their own ways. This film takes the time to explain why - except for the boy next door - the other member of the special people's club. A chance missed, I think.

The story is depressing and frustrating. Various episodes in the movie are bizarre. For example, I can't understand the horrific behaviors of Dawn's family, most notably her parents. There are moments of subtle comedy. Parents should know that there is rather graphic dialogue in this film, so it's not for younger kids. All the actors in this movie are great. The characters are very realistically portrayed. Matarazzo and Sexton were great in their roles. Although this movie is from 1996, (sadly) it can still speak to youths of the present. The bullying that Dawn experiences is almost unbearable to watch. I still recommend the film for the performances.

A tough journey into the acute daily misery of being an unpopular adolescent. Painful and funny in turns. Dawn surfs the waves of the various power-plays that keep crashing against her and I sense she will make it, in part due to the strength gained from these adversarial experiences.

Certainly a more powerful film for those of us who can recall the hard times of being 14, than those who are in the midst of it.
