One of the most loved television series of all time is brought back to life with a fresh cast and sumptuous production values. It's 1936, and six years since parlor maid Rose left 165 Eaton Place, when fate brings her back as housekeeper to its new owners: Sir Hallam, his wife Lady Agnes, and Maud, Lady Holland, his mother. Rose soon finds she has her work cut out as she recruits a new 'downstairs' family to help run the elegance and finery of the 'upstairs' world.

I didn't really like it. The sets, dress, decorations were superb. But something was missing in this series. Having only seen a few of the original series as a teen this hardly compares. One HUGE problem I had was the story regarding the stories chauffeur was a Nazi sympathizer that was AWFUL! I won't give a lot away. But I hated the character.
When it came to season 2 that season was done in even worse taste in my opinion. I was aghast! again for those of you reading here I don't wish to provide any spoilers but a lot of the writing & direction was hideous! Regarding to certain scenes. In season 2 were in the world was Mrs Rose Buck ( the senior house keeper in the original Upstairs Downstairs) She seems to be missing in action. Fellow library patrons you'll have to view for yourselves. This reboot i.e. remake just misses the mark. Just goes to show that you can have a very attractive cast, seemingly stellar acting but you still can have a below par mini series. It certainly wasn't like watching Call The Midwife! I'm going back to watching the original PBS 1971 series. Sorry for being a downer but this one didn't go down quite well.

Sequel to original TV series. Only 3 parts - Must have been like a miniseries which continued later with a second season (we are watching it now & it seems even better than this first season). You don't necessarily have to watch the original series, but you'll understand more of what's going on in the first season and the subtleties of the subsequent story, if you do.

I have never seen the original t.v. miniseries (SPL has it). I enjoyed this version, the first series has an old woman who spent time in India with her husband during the British Imperial era. She is back home with her pet monkey and her Indian secretary living with her son and his wife. She pretty much controls everything and everyone in the house. They are the Upstairs society. Downstairs are the servants; cook, driver, etc. Two separate groups living separately. The son works at the foreign office and has close connections with other Upstairs persona - like the royal Prince. I liked this version a bit more than Downton Abbey because it was more than scheming girls looking for marriages, it had more political context due to the son's position with the foreign office. Starts with the death of King George V (1935), the brief reign of Edward VIII and his relation with Mrs. Simpson, and the impending, looming threat of war with Germany. The son's wife has a sister living with them and she gets involved with Germans setting up a bad situation for the Upstairs crowd, while everyone Downstairs has to ignore or dismiss bad behavior Upstairs. Not sure if the original t.v. series has the same plot line, but I think this version was competing with Downton Abbey and only lasted two years.

Can't watch second dvd on checked out WTS copy. After the Title section the counter goes from 00:00:00 to 00:00:01 and back again, with blank screen and no remote button inputs working.

A sequel of sorts to the original series. However, only the house and one character from the original series maintain the continuity. Interesting characters and storylines.

Good, well worth the three hours.
Unfortunately, they competed with "Downton Abbey" which had more of everything. And combined with some bad luck in their cast, this series did not survive.

Attempt to pickup the family doings, not too bad but nothing compared to the original series of 30 years previous. Jean Marsh plays her older part very well. Great to see Art Malik 30 years after Jewel In the Crown.
