My New BFFs: Funny Ladies in the Library
It’s an almost universal truth that making new friends as an adult can be difficult. High school and college make quick bonding feel easy, but adult life seems to get in the way of making deeper connections. I’m not ashamed to say that some of my best new girlfriends have been found at the library. OK, so these ladies don’t know that we are best friends, but I’m just so certain that when we f… (more)
Fall Into Books…and TV
I love books...just as much as I love television. Sure, there is nothing better than curling up with a good book, but its also just as comforting to flop on my couch and watch a rerun of The Cosby Show. Just my luck fall TV programming is in full swing, and many of today's actors and actresses have written books that are just as good as their shows. Mindy Kaling returns in the second season … (more)

“Work hard, know your shit, show your shit, and then feel entitled. Listen to no one except the two smartest and kindest adults you know, and that doesn't always mean your parents. If you do that, you will be fine.”
― Mindy Kaling, Why Not Me?
“I simply regard romantic comedies as a subgenre of sci-fi, in which the world created therein has different rules than my regular human world.”

“You should know I disagree with a lot of traditional advice. For instance, they say the best revenge is living well. I say it’s acid in the face—who will love them now?”

“One friend with whom you have a lot in common is better than three with whom you struggle to find things to talk about.”

"Sometimes teenage girls ask me for advice about what they should be doing if they want a career like mine one day... Teenage girls, please don't worry about being super popular in high school, or being the best actress in high school, or the best athlete. Not only do people not care about any of that the second you graduate, but when you get older, if you reference your successes in high school too much, it actually makes you look kind of pitiful, like some babbling old Tennessee Williams characters with nothing else going on in her current life. What I've noticed is that almost no one who was a big star in high school is also a big star later in life. For us overlooked kids, it's so wonderfully fair... I just want ambitious teenagers to know it is totally fine to be quiet, observant kids. Besides being a delight to your parents, you will find you have plenty of time to catch up." Chapter; 'Don't Peak in High School'
Are you kidding me? The thrill of living was high school? Come on, Mr. Cougar Mellencamp. Get a life.
I have no discipline; I'm like if Private Benjamin had never toughened up but, in fact, got worse.
I'm getting made fun of because I used to be fat? The laws of bullying allow you to be cruel even when the victim had made strides for improvement? This is when I realized that bullies have no code of conduct.

Add a CommentMindy Kaling is funny and has an odd life story. This book is a must-read for anyone who has felt like an odd ball.
This was a humorous memoir that shared details of Mindy's childhood and offered lots of background on how she ended up as an Emmy-nominated comedy writer/actress. Honest and funny, she often seemed like she was my girlfriend sharing her thoughts and experiences. A fun, light series of essays that easily felt like reading People magazine, which is a guilty pleasure of mine when at the hair salon. Topics she featured included her weight, dating, girlfriends, embarrassing moments, fame, and her parents - I especially appreciated that she really likes her parents.
I love Mindy, she's funny and entertaining and unfortunately half-way through the book she uses "Tr*nny", "Tr*nsvestite" and "Tr*nsexual." All of these are outdated slurs that harmfully impact the transgender community and I was so disappointed to hear it out of her mouth I couldn't continue with the book.
I read this book again because I just can’t get enough. Like many
autobiographies, I feel as if this book truly embodies who Mindy is as an
individual. She discusses all aspects of her life, from finding friends to being a
writer on “The Office.” As a fan, I could hear her voice in my head as I read,
making it that much more personal. Due to her excellent voice throughout the
novel, I found this to be such a relatable, quick read. If you enjoy her comedy,
you will definitely find her personality shining through this book. If you don’t
know her comedy, give it a try, maybe you’ll find your new favorite.
This was a funny and amusing look at Mindy in her early 30's. Most of the book was quite engaging as we got to learn about her childhood, adolescence, early 20's and her struggles to find a fit within the television industry, which was offered in a witty and entertaining manner. The last few chapters lacked direction for me and seemed less about her Journey and revelations and more about her idiosyncrasies and dislikes. Overall a decent read from someone who is still growing and evolving and yet is a successful & inspiring role model for young Women of Colour, especially those from the South Asian Diaspora.
This funny book is even funnier as read by author Mindy Kaling herself! If you’re familiar with her work (The Office and The Mindy Project) you will LOVE this. Enjoy Mindy’s witty observations about life, the universe, and everything as she takes you on a tour from her childhood to her success in Hollywood. (submitted by CC)
What an entertaining read. Stories of growing up, career, love life and more. And every word stays true to Kaling’s personality. I read it in her voice!
Mindy Kaling is really quite funny. You will enjoy this I promise!
It was fun to read this as an "Office" fan who knew nothing about Kaling. Full of brutally honest and hilarious stories from her career and early life.
Fun book! I’ve never watched the Office but I’m glad I read this first! I’ve also never watched the Mindy project. But still! Funny, endearing, relatable! Whether you know mindy Kaling or not, I’d recommend this book!
