RKO, near bankruptcy, after Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane" and "The Magnificent Ambersons," hired Val Lewton, to make a series of "B" low budget suspense films. With no money to include major actors and costly special effects, Lewton worked with the directors to make the films scary with strange characters, shadows, darkness, eerie music, etc. inducing the audience to infer much about the danger lurking around each corner. This film debuted Kim Hunter seeking what evilness had made her sister go missing. In just a few years, Hunter would be blacklisted from Hollywood, only to reappear years later with an Oscar win as Stella in Kazan's masterpiece, "A Streetcar Named Desire."
