It is 1975, a perfect spring in Istanbul. Kemal, scion of one of the city's wealthiest families, is about to become engaged to Sibel, daughter of another prominent family, when he encounters Fusun, a beautiful shopgirl and a distant relation. Thus begins an obsessive but tragic love affair that will transform itself into a compulsive collection of objects--a museum of one man's broken heart--that chronicle Kemal's lovelorn progress and his afflicted heart's reactions.

Rarely, if ever, do I stick with a book I do not like and yet I gave 20+ hours of my life listening to chapter after chapter after chapter of a man describing evenings spent watching TV with his love interest and stealing pair after pair of salt and pepper shakers. Perhaps, the author wanted us to feel in real time the slow passing of the years.

So why did I stick with it? Well for 20+ hours of commuting I was transported to the Istanbul of the 1970s and 80s. I learned all about the neighborhoods, landmarks, streets, politics, religion and class system - and it was wonderful. John Lee is an amazing voice actor. I could listen to him say "Bosphorus" all day long.
