Great history.
Good insight into Ruben's balancing act.
Exceptional man, artist, intellect, 98% honest
If for the art, lacking somewhat.
If for history, wow.
If for politics, excellent.
If for a gripping read, ok.
You'll be privy to another side of a great painter living 400 years ago.

An interesting book about the unknown facet of one of the best painters of history. Rubens, famous for his large and vivid compositions, took inspiration from his days as ambassador and politician, times in which he developed his taste and grandeur.

There is a line that exposes the main point of this book: "Rubens had spent a lifetime working to establish peace in Europe, and his paintings of war were meditations on it's awful costs, rather than bellicose arguments for aggression."

A man with a double high life: a man that reached the zenit of both, the art of painting and the art of social and political intelligence.

Nice idea, but flawed execution. What it does provide is a good overview of international politics at the time.
