The Dark Side is a dramatic, riveting, and definitive narrative account of how the United States made self-destructive decisions in the pursuit of terrorists around the world--decisions that not only violated the Constitution, but also hampered the pursuit of Al Qaeda. In spellbinding detail, Jane Mayer relates the impact of these decisions by which key players, namely Vice President Dick Cheney and his powerful, secretive adviser David Addington, exploited September 11 to further a long held agenda to enhance presidential powers to a degree never known in U.S. history, and obliterate Constitutional protections that define the very essence of the American experiment. With a new afterward.

Right on the money! This foreshadows the 2016 election results perfectly as the companion to her book "Dark Money". Dollars equal votes in the world's largest banana republic. Just follow the money..." It was bought"

I recently read "The New Yorker staff writer Jane Mayer's "Dark Money," which is about the corrupting influence of right-wing money (The Koch Brothers are the villains.) on politics. This earlier book tackles torture and the Bush administration's legal machinations to undermine human rights and the Geneva convention. While the basics on well-known by now, Mayer is particularly interested in the legal and ethical aspects of torture and this is sheds new, disturbing light on the subject. Some other worthy books of a similar nature: "Chain of Command," "Standard Operating Procedure," "Dirty Wars."

When I first read this book, I thought the basic premise was both specious and highly erratic, the author upholding the status quo, everything very TV-like or movie-like! Ms. Mayer's very own subsequent reporting [specifically, on the torture queen, Alfreda Bikowsky Silverstein, after the release of the Senate's summary on the CIA torture report] does much to refute her 2008 premise.
Let's just examine the facts, not the suppositions.
FACT: Several months after 9/11/01, offshore hedge funds doubled from $2 trillion to over $4 trillion in valuation.
FACT: On the morning of 9/11/01, Flight 77 crashed dead center into the Pentagon's reinforced west wall [which in of itself was most strange, since that was the most difficult approach, and the greatest destruction would have been from crashing into the roof?] killing almost all of the auditing team which had uncovered the unaccounted for $2.3 trillion in DoD funds.
FACT: America was attacked on 9/11 by 15 Saudis [the Flight 77 was an all-Saudi hijacking, BTW], 2 Yemenis, 1 Egyptian and 1 hijacker of unknown origin on a stolen Kuwaiti passport.
FACT: On that very same morning, the NRO's operations center had been evacuated during an exercise, where multiple planes simulated flying into their facility. The evacuation meant that Eastern Seaboard satellites could not be manually tasked to observe the airspace above Washington, D.C., and NYC. Time to follow the money, not the suppositions at the political theater level.

December 9, 2014 - Senator Diane Feinstein, issues the government 500 page report on the torture of US Detainees. This book is a great companion to that newly issued report.

This book was a finalist for the National Book Award, meaning it was considered to be one of the best non-fiction books of the year. It is an excellent supplement to "Black Banners," as it is the story of how Bush/Cheney secretly decided to make CIA agents believe that it was legal to torture suspected terrorists. Cheney and Bush and all of the politicians involved in the torture of prisoners do not want you to read this book as it exposes their lack of humanity.

A very sobering and disturbing account of how a democracy, given the right (or wrong) circumstances, can be led astray and end up resembling an authoritarian regime intolerant of opposition, implicitly condoning torture, and engaging in under-handed methods on so many levels -- all in the name of protecting the nation. Those responsible seemed to believe they were on some sort of a higher mission but in fact were utterly misguided. The book ends by describing them as "fools and zealots". History will probably judge them as such as well.

I have not yet read this book but have been waiting for it to be published. Its subject is of extreme importance. How sad that as of today I am the only person to have requested it.
