Asa is a young Russian naval service dreamer who returns to his sister's nomadic brood on the desloate Hunger Steppe to begin a hardscrabble career as a shepherd. But before he can tend a flock of his own, Asa must win the hand of the only eligible bachelorette for miles, his alluringly mysterious neighbor Tulpan. Accompanied by his girlie magazine-reading sidekick, Asa will stop at nothing to prove he is a worthy husband and herder.

This is the best film from Kazakhstan that I have ever seen as it most likely is the only film from Kazakhstan that I have ever seen. It’s a simple story of the life and survival of a family of sheepherders trying to determine why so many of the sheep are dying. Tulpan is a young woman, the only single woman for miles around. The young man in this story would like to marry her and start his own herd of sheep.

There is not too much of a plot, but the camera basically followed the actors in a documentary-style, capturing life of a nomad family in the steppes of Kazakhstan. Though not very 'entertaining', I find the viewing experience highly educational.

Interesting glimpse into a rough environment in a land far, far away.

An awful film that won several awards at Festivals. Were the awards for actually making a film in that place? It couldn't be for the content. Avoid this film at all costs.

Wonderful. It just goes to show how little wizardry is necessary to make a compelling and all-round excellent film. Fresh and real with sparks of humour.

The film puts you right into the life of an animal herding nomadic family in the steppes of Central Asia. The visuals are beautiful, and the story strong, but the film's genius is using sound to immerse you into the film, and for a moment into the life of the steppes themselves. NOT a place or a life you would want to live. Part of the poignancy is that the central character wants just that life very badly, but can't find a wife (or anyone else) to share it with him.

I enjoyed this film set in Khasikstan (sp?). You see the real life struggles that these nomadic people live. I had to fast forward through some of the scenes that dragged. And while realistic, I did not appreciate the loud toddler sounds or singing. Otherwise, a very good film about a part of this world that is so different from our own.

Ce film respire la vie sous toutes ses couleurs. Il nous montre un quotidien comme il ne s'en vit plus. Les nomades ont beaucoup à nous apprendre sur la simplicité. Un film plein d'inspirations.

This is a really quirky movie about a dreamer who wants to achieve his version of nervana. Full of braying animals, dust storms and small moments of laughter. Not a great movie, but a nice little quirky one.
