Imamura depicts the clash of cultures (Japanese and American) in a Japanese town coping with the post WW II American naval base. Imamura films in a way that goes beyond Ozu and Kurosawa, blending studio shots with location shots and adds a satirical/comical tone to a Japanese town's people sadly warped by the corrupting presence of the navy's sailors and money.
