Paris, 1942. Lucas Steiner is a Jew who feels compelled to leave the country in order to survive the German occupation during WWII. His wife Marion is an actress and a member of the Resistance who goes on to direct the theater for him. She tries to keep the theater alive by rehearsing a new play. She hires Bernard Granger for the leading role. The troupe believes that the show must go on no matter the circumstances. But Lucas never left the country, he is actually hiding in the basement.

The Jewish theatre owner and director has fled the scene during the Nazi occupation of France and his Christian wife, played by Catherine Deneuve, takes over the theatre and hires Gerard Depardieu to play the lead in a new play. Unlike most films like this, the Nazi's only play in the background as threats to any Jews that might remain and as censors to French media and theatre. Depardieu, amazingly appears to be handsome and slim and trim and shows nothing of the paunch and brutishness of his later films. Sadly, this is one of the last films of Francois Truffaut, who would soon die early from brain tumors.
