Top Picks: Emma Thompson
You have to hand it to Emma Thompson, who turns 60 this month: few people in show business have her work ethic and the talent to match. In researching this post, I was amazed at how many movies she's been in, even if I have seen a fair number of them. In the interest of space, I'm going to restrict myself to movies that Thompson has starred in, though it will not be all of even those (sorry,… (more)
Practically Perfect: Mary Poppins Readalikes
A tea party on the ceiling. A dance across the rooftops of London. Diving into a chalk drawing. There are almost too many magical moments to count in the 1964 Disney adaptation of Mary Poppins starring Julie Andrews, based on the books by P.L. Travers. But, to me, the most magical moment of all is when the stern, overworked Mr. Banks remembers how to laugh and the whole family heads to the… (more)

Mary Poppins: You know, you *can* say it backwards, which is "docious-ali-expi-istic-fragil-cali-rupus" - but that's going a bit too far, don't you think?
Bert: Indubitably!
Mr. Banks: Just a moment, Mary Poppins. What is the meaning of this outrage?
Mary Poppins: I beg your pardon?
Mr. Banks: Will you be good enough to explain all this?
Mary Poppins: First of all, I would like to make one thing quite clear.
Mr. Banks: Yes?
Mary Poppins: I never explain anything.

This is one of my absolute favorite Disney movies. It is, to borrow a line,"practically perfect in every way." The acting and the special effects are wonderful and the message is one that is so needed in the world today. I still laugh and sing along after seeing it countless times!
ah spoon full of sugar!
Children's classic with an adult message, too: Mrs. Banks is a suffragette, Mr. Banks is a workaholic who needs to revisit his priorities. Julie Andrews is the generally kind governess that the kids asked for in their own ad. Classic musical tunes.
Charming. Wonderful. Wholesome. The only version of Mary Poppins that we will watch in our home.
see the film "Saving Mr. Bank" {that the SPL has} for some important background to the Mary Poppins franchise.
A classic
The original is always best! Love it.
Come on. This is about as good as musicals and family films get. What's not to like? Don't nit-pick, just immerse yourself and enjoy.
Julie Andrews is a Treasure! I love her movie musicals. Add to the wonderful Julie Andrews, a Disney movie, a step-forward in live/animation, a great ensemble cast, and a greatly written script and song booklet; you have a winner of a movie. This movie is fun to re-watch and to see what you learn from it this time.
