So what if only somewhat compatible with the novel. Pat Boone is surprisingly pretty good. Arlene Dahl character great counterpoint to James Mason. Not the best special effects, and the lizards are pretty bad. But all in all a fun, entertaining movie. Now read a good translation of the original.

VERY GOOD 1959 high adventure film with excellent cinematography - and acting by James Mason, Pat Boone, Arlene Dahl, and Diane Baker. Did see it as a youth when it came out - fun to see again.

Not nearly as good as I remembered it as a teenager.

Fair - Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959) 132 min. Filmed in Cinemascope, the Pan & Scan treatment of this print is tragic to say the least. The film itself is a fine adaptation of Jules Verne's story of scientists travelling to the center of the Earth. Though James Mason adds a certain sophistication to the film, the film's lengthy drawn-out travel scenes, and the live lizards made-out to be giant monsters bring this epic to its knees. The film earned three Oscar nominations in 1960 including Special Effects, Art Direction and Sound. OPL needs a DVD wide-screen version of this film for a better look.
