Becoming Jane
DVD - 2008
The young Jane Austen wishes to be a writer. Her mother thinks otherwise. Although she is offered many marriage proposals she accepts none until the mischievous Thomas Lefroy shows up and turns her world around. At first she finds him ignorant and self centered but as she gets to know him, they start to flirt and eventually fall in love. Thomas' relatives disagree with the match and threaten to disinherit him if he marries her. Jane's mother also disagrees with the match. As a result of this, Thomas tries to convince Jane to run away with him. Instead, Jane stays with her family and ends her affair with Lefroy. She begins to write some of her greatest works of all time. Lefroy becomes the inspiration for Mr. Darcy in the novel Pride and Prejudice.

Lady Gresham: "What is [Jane] doing?"
Mr. Wisley: "Writing."
Lady Gresham: "Can anything be done about it?"”
Jane Austen: Cassie, his heart will stop at the sight of you, or he doesn't deserve to live. And, yes, I am aware of the contradiction embodied in that sentence.

"Your horizons must be...widened." Tom Lefroy on Jane's lack of, uh, experience.

Add a CommentAnother Victorian movie, with great costumes, good story line, nice looking actors.
Romantic...at first Jane's "boyfriend" Tom Lefroy played by James McAvoy didn't seem like a good match for Anne Hathaway's Jane Austen but his charm hooked me in.
The movie wanted me to look up Jane's life and who Lefroy was...interesting...the possibilities...it's romantic and makes me feel like reading her books.
p.s. I've read Northanger Abbey and Pride and Prejudice in college and this makes me feel like reading them again :)
Historically inaccurate; ok film. It was too long, in my opinion.
meh...
Oh well...I guess not everyone has the same image of the real Jane Austen that I do.
This movie was a total waste of time. The completely invented plot seemed contrived to include any possible situation that happens in one of Austen's books and make it happen to her. Silly piece of fluff, in my opinion.
Great movie!!!!
I loved this movie!! <3 Its now an all time favourite
The actors were great together. I loved their chemistry. Great movie.
My friend was the one who recommended this to me, and although some parts were cute and good, I thought it would've been better. But it was interesting to watch, considering i don't usually watch these types of movies :)
