In A deeper sleep, P.I. Kate Shugak has been working on a case for the Anchorage D.A. involving the murder of a woman by her husband. Louis Deem has been the subject of investigations before, and he's never been convicted. But Kate and state trooper Jim Chopin are convinced that this time hell be punished for his actions. When he's found not guilty, Kate and Jim and the rest of Nilniltna, Alaska, are certain that a man has gotten away with murder and that its only a matter of time before he tries again. Sure enough, a few weeks later a woman and her son are shot, the victims of an apparent robbery. But this time, Kate and Jim have a witness, and they're not going to let Deem get away again. Or will he?

I love the Kate Shugak series, and the story trumped my disappointment that this one was not narrated by Marguerite Gavin who is the narrator for all the previous books I've listened to in the series. Alert: When you settle in to listen to this, make sure you have flour, salt, and yeast on hand because you may find yourself with a yen to make bread.

Louis Deem gets away with everything, and the Park rats hate him. He's acquitted for the second time of the murder of a young wife that everyone's convinced he committed. That's bad enough. Then a robbery gone wrong results in two more deaths, and Johnny, a witness, is sure he can ID Deem. This brings the whole family into danger, but Kate's proud that he sticks to his guns and Jim arrests Deem. However, this is his only solid evidence, and the powers that be force his hand and he must let him go. The results shock everyone, and Jim is hard pressed to know what to do. Interesting relationship issues, as well as police ethical issues. Also Kate has to face up to her grandmother's desire for her to take a leadership role in the tribe. So far as I can get copies of this series in order, I'm learning it really pays to read them that way, as I learn much more about the characters.
