Isabella Swan's move to Forks, a small, perpetually rainy town in Washington, could have been the most boring move she ever made. But once she meets the mysterious and alluring Edward Cullen, Isabella's life takes a thrilling and terrifying turn. Up until now, Edward has managed to keep his vampire identity a secret in the small community he lives in, but now nobody is safe, especially Isabella, the person Edward holds most dear. The lovers find themselves balanced precariously on the point of a knife--between desire and danger. Deeply romantic and extraordinarily suspenseful, Twilight captures the struggle between defying our instincts and satisfying our desires. This is a love story with bite.

I liked this book a lot the first time I read it but soon saw the flaws once I really started to think about it. For one, I was very annoyed with Bella’s being weak and clumsy. It just seemed that the author put so much emphasis on her being a klutz and it was actually implied as an obstacle preventing Bella from doing things. Being a self sufficient person, it was definitely hard to relate to. I also want to say that I’m confused at how Bella and Edward actually came to love each other... It seemed to me that they were more or less just attracted to each other and then because Edward was so infatuated by her smell and obsessed with her he just like was in love with her for no reason? I guess he liked her personality but it just seemed that he didn’t have too many reasons to be completely and madly in love with her. The same goes for Bella, she just kind of likes Edward even though he does nothing and she doesn’t even know him well. Their whole relationship is based off of shallow feelings and attraction. I can at least say that their relationship is more explained in the book then it is in the movie.

The beginning of the novel really hooked me. It's a great way to start off a story by giving a brief account of a current situation and then flashing back to all the events leading up to how the character got there. It's also weird to go back and read the books and realize Bella is the same age as me and has this weird kind of obsessive vampire love story. Especially cause I'm thinking about going to college in Oregon or Washington, which is the setting of the series. The baseball game is probably one of the most iconic scenes, and the rest of the novel has captivating twists and turns. It's definitely cheesy, but I can't deny it's a good read.

I just watched the movies for the third time (yes, I watched the movies before reading the books) and I'm now just starting to read the series.

It looks like people either hate the books, or love them based on the comments.

I wish I could say that I understand why people like this. I don't. This is just a bad book, there's nothing else to it. The writing was repetitive, the plot was barely existent, and the characters were bland and inconsistent. Bella is a whiny, inconsiderate, and one-dimensional protagonist who spends most of the time complaining and feeling sorry for herself. Edward is supposedly a very selfless character, but it seems like he is acting more for his own ends than for Bella's safety.
The relationship between Bella and Edward isn't particularly healthy either. Not only is Edward 107 years old, but they don't communicate very well and the way Bella feels about Edward appears to be more obsessive than romantic. He's always following her around, and even though Bella clearly doesn't want him to, she doesn't do anything about it because she believes that his intentions are pure.
The book is unnecessarily long for the sliver of a storyline that it has. The plot is badly thought out and very rushed at the end, even though the book over 500 pages long. It felt fragmented and broken, as well as very irrelevant.
Even the prose in general was very frustrating for me. I am so sick of hearing how rainy Forks is --you CHOSE to stay Bella, don't complain--, how beautiful Edward is, and I'm not quite sure that Stephenie Meyer knew what 'masochistic' meant when she was writing this book. I can forgive one miscontextualized use, but not 5. There are also lots of unnecessarily confusing sentences that have unclear structure and make the book hard to digest.
Finally, the bad messages were actually concerning to read for a YA book; the messages the author was sending are definitely not something you would want anyone to believe. This book promotes anti-feminist messages and relying on your boyfriend to take care of you, Bella is secretive with her father, and her friends aren't supportive in the least. And don't get me started on the wrongness of how Edward treats Bella, constantly gaslighting her, making her question herself, telling her what to do, stopping her from having other friendships (Jacob, Mike, etc.) and stalking her while she sleeps? That is not romantic in the least.
Don't read this, it's just not worth it.

There are a lot of things that aren't...great in this teen vampire romance novel (namely the writing) but it's gonna grab you and not let you go until you read every single book in the series.

“How old are you?”
“Seventeen,” he answered promptly.
“And how long have you been seventeen?”
His lips twitched as he stared at the road. “A while,” he admitted at last.”

Twilight is about a girl named Bella who moves to from Arizona to Washington to be with her dad. At first, she isn't happy because Washington is so cloudy and cold compared to sunny Arizona. During her first few days of school she meets someone named Edward, who she later finds out to be a vampire. As their friendship begins to grow, Bella begins to realize she may have feelings for him. Edward warns of the risks she is putting herself in by being with him. I would recommend it for anyone who likes romance mixed with a bit of action.
