Robert Mitchum is Frank, a laid-back, working-class guy who drives an ambulance and whose ambition is to marry his girlfriend Mary and open his own gas station. Then he encounters the neurotic Diane, a stunning upper-class beauty who has other ideas. Diane has a strange relationship with her father (Herbert Marshall, in a variation of his weak and clueless cuckold role), has probably murdered her stepmother, and, having hired Frank as the family chauffeur, is determined at all costs to keep him in this dreamlike, psycho-sexual nor thriller directed by Otto Preminger. A nod to veteran actor Leon Ames, excellent as a wily, amoral attorney.
Brace yourself for the shocker ending which, 60-plus years later, is still jaw-dropping; 1950 audiences must have leaped out of their seats. Bonus features include a knowing, and very entertaining commentary track by film noir historian Eddie Muller. (Among other interesting things, Muller reveals he couldn't persuade Simmons to participate in the commentary because she still harbors such painful memories of working with Preminger and producer Howard Hughes.)

This is one of those movies you wouldn't want to pick for date night.

Directed by Otto Preminger, 1952's Angel Face is a nicely paced Crime/Thriller about passion gone haywire.

With the innocent face of an angel, and the deceptive heart of a devil, the young and alluring Diane Tremayne uses her many seductive charms to set up the handsome ambulance driver, Frank Jessup, as the fall guy when she secretly plots out the fool-proof murder of her wealthy stepmother in order to collect on her inheritance.

In Angel Face it's all flimsy alibis, heartless betrayals, and thrilling courtroom drama, compounded by the fire of a femme fatale who's too dangerous to trust, but too enticing to resist.

Set in and around Beverly Hills, Angel Face, which was filmed in b&w, stars one of my fave movie tough-guys from the early 1950s, Robert Mitchum.

Trust me, your cheating beloved will get his, one day. In the mean time, enjoy watching Robert Mitchum get his, and more, from fairy princess Jean Simmons.
