It all started with a birthday present that Omri didn't want, a small plastic Indian that was no use to him at all. But an old wooden cupboard and a special key brought his unusual toy to life, and strange and wonderful things began to happen. As Omri struggles to balance his real life in England with the characters of the Wild West of 18th century America, his incredible adventures are a fantasy beyond his wildest imagination.

Happy birthday, Omri! His friend Patrick gave him a hand-me-down, plastic Indian figure. His parents gave him an old wooden cupboard & a special key that's been passed down through a few generations. Omri puts his plastic Indian figure in the cupboard & tried a few different keys from around the house to try to lock it. The special key does the trick! Apparently this is no ordinary key though. After locking the cupboard, miraculously the Indian figure comes to life as a tiny Indian person! And so begins a process of Omri & Little Bull getting to know one another. It isn't long before Omri's friend Patrick is in on the secret & another figure is placed in the cupboard introducing us to Boone, the cowboy counterpart to Little Bull. All kinds of mayhem ensues when Patrick insists on bringing the miniature people to school & nearly kills them. Omri & Patrick eventually patch things up & work jointly to care for Little Bull & Boone before deciding that it was time to turn them back into toys once more & into their respective time periods.

I remember my 3rd grade teacher Mrs Jones reading us this book during quiet time. The simple magic of a cupboard, a key, & a few toy figures set my imagination running. What kid, or adult for that matter, doesn't enjoy a few hours of believing that any toy can come to life with the simple turn of a key?!
