#TBT: James Dean’s Final Ride

James Dean rocketed to fame in the early 1950s with three iconic roles playing angry and disillusioned young men. He was a Midwestern boy with dreamy Hollywood looks and the rebellious nature of the Beat Generation. Dean's career came to a sudden end when he crashed his Porsche Spyder on a California highway on September 30, 1955. For this Throwback Thursday, take a look at the movies that ma… (more)

3 Key Movies Every Fan of La La Land Should See

Most movies have their influences in earlier movies, but like the work of Quentin Tarantino, La La Land wears its influences on its sleeve. Set in Hollywood and featuring an aspiring actress as a character, it's a MOVIE-movie that whispers in your ear, "Let's keep these cool old classics alive. Have you seen this one? What about this? And this?" Here are three films that fans of La La Land w… (more)

This is how I see this movie now....First of all, it doesn’t come as surprise here to see dissatisfied, bored and misunderstood teens, but how much family unit lost its influence on directing youth towards real values in life. When parents pop sleeping pills, fall under the spell of consumerism, being weak and meek, then you know that trouble is coming....😞

disaffected teens and seemingly clueless parents
I was always under the impression that Dean was the bad boy of this movie, but no
love the setting at the planetarium

I enjoy the movie but I believe it would have had more of an impact if it was filmed in black and white. Loved the part when James Dean said that his father had to smack his mother. This was for the fact the father was being hen pecked by the mother. Remember, although James Dean was 24 he was acting the part of a teenage boy between the ages of 16 to 18 years of age still trying to figure out what a man is. He saw his father lacking as a role model for him. The big seen that revealed the father being hen pecked was when his father accidentally dropped a tray of food on the floor and caused a mess. James Dean told him just to leave it but the father wearing a flower printed apron said he could not as mom would be mad. The father always acted as if the mother and mother-in-law ruled the roost which was also portrayed in the police station when they told the father just to shut up. The bit of the chicken game is typical of teenagers especially during that time. The movie reminded me of the West Side Story.

Never got to appreciate the craze for this film on rebel teens with troubling adult supervision. Much older now, still do not understand the family and gang dynamics of those days. However, stars were born: Dean and Wood.

One of the best films of the 50s, directed by one of the best film directors, ever, Nicholas Ray. Unfortunately, James Dean, Natalie Wood, Nick Adams, and Sal Mineo died prematurely, thus inspiring a rumor that the film was cursed. The Beatles, in Liverpool, before they became the Fab 4, were influenced by this film, and by THE BLACKBOARD JUNGLE. John Lennon, leader of the Beatles, was said to have been researching the death of Sal Mineo, when he died. The second disc could be said to be superfluous, except it can be seen how Dean stood out from his contemporaries, during wardrobe tests. If ever there was someone born to be an actor, it is Jimmy. I'd like to have seen him live on to become a James Bond villain opposite Sean Connery.

Whew, teenage drama! Watching it today, seems like most of the adults needed some sort of therapy. Good performances from Dean, Wood and Mineo - sadly these three passed away quite young - James Dean at the age of 24, makes you wonder how his career would have developed if he had the chance to make more movies (he only made three.) I had a bit of a laugh - his father was portrayed by Mr. Howell (Gilligan's Island) and the caring cop at the beginning was portrayed by Maxwell Smart's boss! The Special Features on the DVD seemed very dated (1974) hosted by Peter Lawford interviewing Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo and Sammy Davis Jr. (he was a neighbor of James Dean!) Of course, Sammy says Dean was a cool cat - almost seems like they were going to nominate him for the Rat Pack! They talk about Dean meeting Marlon Brando, discuss whether he might have been gay, and whether he had a deathwish. All that seems a bit trivial, watch his movies instead! I have Giant coming up soon.

I recommend this DVD for adults. Rebel Without A Cause is a classical 1950's movie. The attitudes of the characters reflect the 1940-1950's society attitudes and approach to life. The 1950 movies seem to have rebellion as a theme. The story is strong. It is too violent for children to watch. It shows how insecure many people feel. They feel inferior. Some look for continuous external confirmation to being superior by being abusing others. For example, being in a gang and not speaking up as an individual. The gang mentality is harmful to many. I was appalled how people were treated. This movie has that moral lesson in the story. The actors did a great job.

One of my favorite movies. RIP James Dean!

A movie that had a huge impact in my adolescent life of the 1950s as well as on all those around me. We all, those of us who weren't on the student councils, cheerleading, or lettering in sports, wanted to be rebels, too. And I suppose we were.

Gorgeous Natalie Wood, brief James Dean and Sal Mineo provide a glimpse at teenage America when it was defining itself for most of the remainder of the 20th Century and became, itself, a part of the definition.

Haven't seen this in a while - glad I did again.

James Dean was 23 at time of movie - Natalie Wood was 18,but had been acting since about 8.

The special features on the other DVD were also quite good. Glad I took the time to watch them.

When the trio of main characters explore the vacate mansion:

-Now, would you like to rent or are you more in the mood to buy, dear?
-You decide, darling. Remember, our budget.
-Oh, don't give it a second thought, it's, uh, only 3 million dollars a month.
-Oh, we can afford it. I'll scrimp and I'll save and I'll work my fingers to the bone. You see, we're newlyweds... oh, there's just one more thing... what about... Children?
-Right this way, mind you, though, we don't encourage them. They're such a bother.
-Oh I quite agree, I just can't stand it when they cry. What do you do with them when they cry?
-Drown 'em like puppies, ha!
-The nursery's far away from the rest of the house.
-If you have children, you'll find this is a wonderful arrangement. They can carry on and you won't notice.
-In fact, if you lock them in, you'll never have to see them again. Much less, talk to them.
-Talk to them? Nobody talks to children. No, they just tell them.
