Nothing Like A Dame: Women in Pulp
Summer is prime time for lighter reading, and CPL has what you're looking for. Of course, the beach read is hardly a new concept, starting in its modern form with the pulp novel. They were inexpensive books meant to be tucked in a purse or pocket (hence, the publisher Pocket Books) and read on the train or whenever one had leisure. Often lurid takes on issues current in their heyday of the… (more)

Add a Comment"Laura", 1944, stars the immemorable Gene Tierney as Laura. No question that men wanted her but was one of them willing to kill her to prevent his competition? Clifton Webb is superbly cast as the suave and immoral newspaper columnist who never met a saint he wouldn't sneer at. Vincent Price never looked better as a parasitic playboy who might have married Laura if there hadn't been another skirt wearing meal ticket in town. Judith Anderson of 'Rebecca' fame might be jealous of the better looking Laura and have reason to eliminate her competition. Dana Andrews plays the unsmiling detective assigned to the case. He wound up getting the girl because the other men were such low competition as people. But detectives don't belong in the artistic world of Laura and there is doubt about the success of their union. Otto Preminger directed Laura and did a masterful job. This black and white film might turn off today's pampered viewer but when you watch this one you will agree the stars could not perform any better no matter how much color you add. Sadly Gene Tierney died at age 70 from emphysema contracted from the cigarettes she smoked to deepen her voice. Learn from it people.
Laura is one of my favorite films and I really love the theme of Laura, as well. It is an excellent film noir film. Clifton Webb was excellent in his role as Waldo and I really liked it when he was doing the narrating about Laura. It's really nice seeing Vincent Price in non-horror films, like Laura. He did a very good job when he filmed Laura. Judith Anderson also did a good job, as well. They were both in The Ten Commandments and they did not have scenes with one another in the Biblical film that starred Charlton Heston. Tierney and Andrews were great in the film and they did a marvelous job portraying their roles. I consider Laura a must-see film. I really enjoyed watching the film whenever I had watched it on TV multiple times and I will continue to enjoy it whenever I watch Laura again in the future.
Like this film noir alot. Have rented it several times. Laura is a fascinating look at who dunit mysteries at its best. See this dvd.
Dana Andrews plays a detective that is trying to solve the murder of a beautiful woman, Laura. He becomes totally obsessed and in love with her portrait that is hanging on the wall of the crime scene. This is one of the best film noirs and just below the level of “The Maltese Falcon” and “The Big Sleep.”
Waldo was a mess? This is a great movie and seeing Vincent Price play an average guy(sleeze) was cool too!
I was really surprised by this one. It starts out rather dry and slow, but it really took me in.
Clifton Webb is spectacular!
Excellent suspense movie that keeps you guessing until the end.
Dana Andrews is a cop that has been called in to investigate a woman's vicious murder - her face has been shot off. But the more he investigates her life, the more he is attracted to her. And then she walks through the door. And this creates another mystery - who was really killed? Gene Tierney is so lovely in this film it is as if she really was a phantom haunting Andrews' dreams. And the beautiful theme in this movie will stay with you long after the end credits.
