I think the first two-thirds of the book were pretty good, but the final battle and ending felt pretty rushed and unsatisfactory. I agree with ArapahoeTina; really wanted to like this book more, and appreciate the representation, so I did…

Entertaining story of a kick ass indigenous monster killer who has to overcome or outwit both monsters and native gods and figure out what man in her life is trustworthy and worthy of her love.

Maggie is a Monster Hunter in a world that is unrecognizable. There was a world war, nuclear holocaust, and a huge flood. A Giant wall built by the Tribal Council protected the land she lives on, but there are monsters that destroy and…

Great first book in a series, introducing the lightning fast heroine and monster slayer, Maggie Hoskie, in a new Navajo Sixth World where legendary is real, most of our world has submerged, need is great, and truth slippery. Looking…

Great concept, rich untapped mythological backing, horrible writing. The dialog is mostly super clunky and unrealistic exposition. Like a doctor explaining to a traffic cop that red means stop on a stoplight. Characterization is thin…

I really wanted to like this book more. I loved the idea of a dystopian world set on a Navajo reservation, but this just didn't all come together for me. I'm still grateful for unique voices in publishing and think this book could have…

I tore through this book! Thankfully the sequel has already been released. The book has a strong female lead. the story is fast-paced and action packed with elements of world building. If you like apocalyptic themes, then I recommend…

Not for the squeamish. The blood splattering details almost made me put it down, but the magical aspect of the story hooked me! I kept wondering how a woman could have written this, it's so much about weapons, and killing, and butchery. I…

I can't get enough of this gritty post-apocalyptic novel with a tough woman lead who struggles with trauma, healing, and also monster-slaying. Maggie learns to own her power, let go of toxic love, and let her chosen family help her beat…

Fantastic, similar to Jane Yellowrock series except she is Cherokee . Good Hopi storyline, makes me think of Thomas Banyacya.. https://www.nytimes.com/1999/02/15/us/thomas-banyacya-89-teller-of-hopi-prophecy-to-world.html . He…

I wanted to like this more than I did. Great concept, and loved the Navajo mythology, but the plot really dragged and I almost abandoned it several times.

Really enjoyed the protagonist and the weaving of Navajo myth/ gods/ creatures. I'm pretty sure, that I'm not pronouncing any of these words correctly in my head. I think the story is more fantasy than sci-fi and looking forward to Book 2…

I really enjoyed this post-apocolyptic fantasy/horror featuring characters from Native American lore. Looking forward to reading the sequel.

Review excerpt: "'Trail of Lightning' was preordered around two months in advance and I would have waited triple that amount for this book if I had to. It’s steeped in Native American (namely Navajo) mythology, badassery, and lots and lots…

Great urban fantasy monster slaying thriller. Kevin Hearne and Neil Gaiman fans might enjoy the appearance of Navajo gods- I know I did!

As a science fiction fan, as well as post apocalyptic, and having cut my teeth on Tony Hillerman's Navajo based mysteries, I thought that this would be right up my alley. But it turned out to be more fantasy than science fiction, and post…

There is so much to love in this book. A strong, complex Native American female protagonist. A detailed rendering of a post-apocalyptic North America. A rich weaving of native culture into a future dystopia. A love story with no good,…

Loved it, loved it, loved it! Roanhorse introduces readers to a world most of us have no clue about. A world of unknown gods and creatures we've never encountered. It's nice a fresh face in the world of sci-fi/ urban fantasy. Great book!

Roanhorse know what she's doing - confidently putting her hero (heroine) through her paces. The post-apocalyptic love child of Tony Hillerman and Jim Butcher, our story has magic and fighting and monsters and Diné flavor, maybe even a…
